Jesus Carlos is a progressive leader with a unique blend of service and expertise. As a Tacoma Human Services Commission Commissioner, Jesus has fought for vulnerable families and equitable community programs. As a former U.S. Army Ranger sniper and decorated veteran, Jesus brings discipline, courage, and a devotion to service. With a Harvard education and experience as a financial advisor, Jesus is adept at data-driven decision-making and fiscal stewardship. This background fuels a bold, solutions-oriented vision for Tacoma’s future – one focused on measurable outcomes that improve daily life for all residents. Jesus envisions a Tacoma where every neighborhood is safe, every family has economic opportunity, affordable housing, a protected environment, and City Hall works for everyone.
Jesus’s platform centers on two flagship priorities—public safety and economic development—while addressing housing affordability, climate action, and equity. Each policy is designed with clear goals and success metrics, ensuring accountability to the people of Tacoma. Below is the comprehensive platform, focusing on bold solutions that deliver real results for the community.
Rebuild trust by assigning officers to walk/bike beats in neighborhoods, attend local meetings, and partner with neighborhood watch groups. Neighborhood Liaison Officers will be accessible to residents, fostering relationships that help prevent crime and improve response times.
A thriving economy requires a local workforce. Jesus will champion workforce training programs, so Tacoma graduates are first in line for new jobs. We’ll collaborate with labor unions, Tacoma Public Schools, Tacoma Community College, UW Tacoma, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) on job training initiatives.
Partner with the Economic Development Board and Chamber of Commerce to aggressively recruit and retain employers in high-growth sectors. By 2050, the Puget Sound region expects Tacoma to add ~94,000 jobs; Jesus will now lay the groundwork targeting industries like clean energy technology, advanced manufacturing, maritime training, and healthcare.
Tacoma residents deserve to feel safe in their homes and public spaces. Today, Tacoma faces serious public safety challenges – crime rates have been significantly above national averages but there are promising signs that smart strategies can make a difference. In 2022, the city suffered a record 45 homicides (fox13seattle.com), but by late 2023, a new data-driven approach led to a 17% year-to-date drop in violent crime. Building on this momentum, Jesus will pursue a comprehensive, outcomes-focused public safety plan
Tacoma’s economy must work for everyone – from the small business owner on Hilltop to the tech startup in downtown to the longshore worker at the port. It has tremendous assets (a deep-water port, talented workforce, affordable space) but needs bold leadership to spur inclusive growth. Jesus’s economic development plan is focused on growth with equity: attracting new investments and jobs while lifting local businesses and workers.
